Pacific Paradise

For a few days, I'll have been truly incommunicado unless I decide to plop down for wifi.  We're at Kapalai, a dive resort in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, literally.  We're about 20 miles off the mainland. The resort is competely built on stilts.  There once used to be an island, or at least sand bar, underneath, but no longer.   There is a small bit of sand that becomes visible at low tide, but otherwise, we're on a manmade structure in the middle of the ocean!

Julie is diving and, to be honest, this is a divers' place. Nearby Palau Sipadan is one of the best diving places in the world.  I did some snorkeling but I was only one of the few non-divers here. I thought about getting certified but it was too much work on too little time. So I mostly just relaxed, read, and enjoyed the views.

It's amazing what you can see in the water along the walkways. The water is so clear. They are coronets, colorful fish, turtles, lionfishes, sting rays, starfish, and much more.  Definitely quite entertaining. And of course the views are amazing!

Oh, if you're curious where Kapalai is, look up 4°13'34.3" N 118°41'2.2" E.  And, yes, it is smack dab in the middle of the ocean.

Today is a very rainy day. I went out with the divers in the hopes of snorkeling elsewhere, but it was too stormy.  That definitely was monsoon weather... So today is a book and wifi day.  Tomorrow, we head back to KK.
